danish modern bentwood bed, NIGHTSTANDS & BENCH

this was one of my earliest explorations into laminated bending.  It is a bedroom set made from locally harvested English elm, and includes a king size platform bed, two nightstands, and a bench.

The bed is is supported by two simple laminated arches at the head and the foot.  Each arch is made up of six layers of english elm, dry bent and glued over a form resulting in a strong, stable supporting structure.  The platform breaks down into component pieces and is joined together with lapped dovetails.

The nightstand is made of solid english elm with maple interiors on the drawers.  The case and drawers are all constructed with hand-dovetail joinery, with integrated hand-pulls on the drawers.  The arched base of the nightstand echoes the bed's supporting arches.

The bench finishes out the set with a matching laminated arch base.

With strong traditional joinery and hand-rubbed oil finish throughout, this set is striking in its minimalism, but uncompromising in the details.
